Show Author Profile Picture In Google Search Results

Google is making a lot of improvements and introducing latest features in their whole system for the development. Some months ago, the latest feature was introduced specially for webmasters and bloggers and that is Google Authorship Markup. It is a kind of certificate or license which helps webmasters and bloggers to produce content is a better way. If you've verified your Google Authorship then whenever you'll search for any keyword and if your webpage appears in the search results then it will be having a profile picture or it will appear like thumbnails. Most of webmasters are willing to get their verified Google authorship to show the author image and today here I'll be guiding them on how can we verify Google authorship and show author image in search results.

In order to display author profile picture in Google search, you may setup profile picture for Google+ and you can use photoshop online free to edit or customize your picture.

Display Author Profile Picture In Google Search

In order to show the profile picture in Google search results, you will need a Google+ account. Because, you've to connect the Google+ account with your Blogger account. It actually shows the Google+ profile, that's why It is required. There are two main methods to to get the Google authorship verified. The first one is verifying with domain email and second is one by manually inserting the rel='author' attribute to the Google+ profile links. And second method needs to link the profile with your site manually. We're going to discuss these both methods below.

Method#1 : Verifying The Domain Email

Verifying the Google authorship with domain web email is not difficult. But it is the most easiest way. And here you will just need to have an email address created in your domain hosting panel or control panel. If you've bought the hosting of your domain then you can easily create that email or you might have already created. It will look likeyourname@yourdomain.com or simply my email address Master@techbloggermaster.com. You can also contact your hosting provider or 24x7 to create that kind of email if you've hosting. Let's come to start the tutorial.
  • First of all, Sign in to your Google+ account.
  • Secondly, Go to Google authorship markup.
  • There in the right side, you will see an input box in the last for domain email address. Simply fill the email address which you've but remember it must be created in your domain hosting like  Master@techbloggermaster.com.
  • After entering the email address, easily click on "Sign Up For Authorship" button at the bottom.
  • Now you will receive an email address for confirmation that email. It will be having a link which you've to click.
  • Open the inbox of that email and click on the confirmation link.
  • A message will appear that you've verified the email address.
  • That's All for verifying Google authorship with email address.

Method#2 : Manually Verifying Google Authorship With rel='author'

This is another manual method specially for those who don't have the hosting for domain and still want to get verified Google authorship. This might be difficult for you but I don't think you will face any problem in doing this method if you follow this tutorial carefully. In this method, we'll make use of rel='author' attribute which help us and Google to verify the authorship. In this method you need an About Us page created in your blog and Google+ profile is also required as it is already needed while verifying Google authorship. So, let's begin the tutorial.

Step#1 : Adding Google+ Badge Widgets In Sidebar
The first thing is that I recommend to add the Google+ badges or widgets in your blog anywhere you want. But I think sidebar is the best idea. This will help you to get linked your profile and Google+ page with your site that will also help to Google in understanding that this is your own site. There is not any long process to add these widgets in your blog but previously, I'd shared a tutorial on how can we these kind badges in our blogger blogs. Just land on the tutorial given in the last upcoming sentence and follow the tutorial. I recommend to add the two widgets which are your Google+ profile and Google+ page if you have. Same as I've added in the sidebar, look at the sidebar and here is the tutorial.

Step#2 : Using rel='author' Attribute In About Us Page
  • Go to pages in Blogger and edit the About Us page.
  • Enter into the HTML Tab and add the following link code anywhere where you want to add.
  • Replace Google+ ID with the ID of your Google+ profile. [You will see the long ID number in the URL of your profile]
  • Replace Your Name With Your Name.
  • Don't touch or remove the rel='author' otherwise the tutorial won't work.
  • Publish or Update the About Us page.
Note : After adding the rel='author' link in your about us page, if you've more links in your blog going to your Google+ profile then I recommend to add rel='author' to all them. I'm not saying to add other links on any other place but If your google+ profile link is already added before the tutorial then you should add rel='author' to the link. Mostly, people have used social widgets in which Google+ profile link might be available. So if also have any kind of widget then add rel='author' to that link in that widget for the quick verification.

Step#3 : Adding your blog link in Google+ profile
By continuing the tutorial, this is last part of the tutorial in which we'll insert your blog link in your profile. And this will make sure to the Google that you're the actual owner. I won't waste your time and I'm not going into deep. Here is the tutorial.
  • Login to your account.
  • Go to the About page.
  • Scroll down and Links section will appear.
  • Click Edit button and a popup will appear. Simply, Add the link there.
  • After placing the link there. Save your profile and you've done!

Checking How The Profile Picture Will Appear In SERPs

This is the additional or advanced part of the post and in this part, we'll check that how the profile picture will appear in Google search results. By default, it will take about a week to completely display the picture in SERPs but there is a tool given by Google and by use of this, we can check that the authorship is verified correctly or not. So, let's check it.

  • Go to Structured Data Testing Tool
  • Enter the URL of your blog and click "Preview".
  • It might take some seconds to check and load the results.
Note : After completing the process, you've to wait at least a week to let the Google get verified your authorship and they may update the pages of you in SERPs. Sometimes, they take more than a month. So, please keep calm and wait for being completed the whole process.

Final Words

People mostly asked me through contact form and on social profiles that how do we show the image in search results. I'm sorry for being late to publish this tutorial. I hope this tutorial is surely going to help those who contact me and also for those who want to get authorship. If you've any problem regarding this guide then feel free to ask in comments. Also share your views on this guide and share this tutorial with your friends. Take Care!

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg tops 2013 charity giving list

Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly topped the giving list for US philanthropists after donating a Silicon Valley foundation with nearly one billion dollars.

Zuckerberg, along with wife, Priscilla Chan, contributed the sum to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation including 18 million in Facebook shares that totaled to about 992 million dollars.

According to Newsmax, Zuckerberg is joined by 14 other big ticket donors in the US, including outgoing New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and businessman and political activist David Koch, who were among those giving away at least 100 million dollars of their fortunes at one time.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy released its annual charitable giving list in which Zuckerberg featured as the first person aged under 30 years of age to top the list of biggest donors.

The report said that Zuckerberg had made the same donation in 2012 with 18 million shares of Facebook stock, but that year the shares were valued at much less, worth under 500 million dollars.

Sibal praises C-DAC for making supercommuting history

Union Communications and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal has congratulated the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) for achieving a significant milestone with the PARAM Yuva II supercomputer.

The supercomputer has been ranked first in India, ninth in the Asia Pacific Region and 44th in the world among the most power efficient computer systems as per the Green500 List announced at the Supercomputing Conference (SC'2013) in Denver, Colorado, USA.

PARAM Yuva - II uses hybrid technology - processor, co-processor and hardware accelerators - to provide the peak compute power of 520.4 Teraflop/s using 210 kiloWatt power. The interconnect network comprises of homegrown PARAMNet-III and Infiniband FDR System Area Network. This system is designed to solve large and complex computational problems. The system has 200 Terabytes of high performance storage, and requisite system software and utilities for parallel applications development.

Sibal said that supercomputing is very important for the all round advancements in the country, and added that the UPA-II Government is planning a big impetus for capacity building and advanced research and development in this area.

He said that he would expect many more contributions from C-DAC, as a key player, in this endeavour.

Supercomputers, in general, consume a lot of electrical power and produce much heat that necessitates elaborate cooling facilities to ensure proper operation.

This adds to increase in the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of a supercomputer. To draw focus towards development of energy efficient supercomputers, Green500 ranks computer systems in the world according to compute performance per watt, thus providing a world ranking based on energy efficiency.

Energy consumed by supercomputers is measured at various Levels - L1, L2, L3 - for purpose of reporting. As the level increases, accuracy and rigor of measurement exercise also increases.

It is also a measure of our capability and noteworthy that C-DAC is the second organization worldwide to have carried out the Level 3 measurement of Power versus Performance for the Green500 List.

Hackers claim to expose phone information of 4.6 million Snapchat users

SnapChat

Phone numbers paired with user names of over 4.6 million alleged Snapchat users were posted online by hackers, a few days after a security research group claimed a vulnerability in the social sharing service that could allow attackers to match phone numbers to Snapchat accounts.

“This database contains username and phone number pairs of a vast majority of the Snapchat users,” said a post on website SnapchatDB.info. The account has since been suspended, apparently by the hosting service. A cached version of the site can be viewed here.

The information was acquired through the recently patched Snapchat exploit and is being shared with the public to raise awareness on the issue, according to the post. “The company was too reluctant at patching the exploit until they knew it was too late and companies that we trust with our information should be more careful when dealing with it,” it added.

The hackers said they had “censored” for now the last two digits of the phone numbers in order to minimize spam and abuse, but asked people to contact them for the uncensored database, which they may agree to release under certain circumstances.

Gibson Security had published proof-of-concept code last week that takes advantage of the “find_friends” feature in the Snapchat application programming interface (API) to iterate and match the phone numbers of users to their Snapchat accounts in a short period of time. Gibson first revealed the vulnerability and other issues in August.

“Theoretically, if someone were able to upload a huge set of phone numbers, like every number in an area code, or every possible number in the U.S., they could create a database of the results and match usernames to phone numbers that way,” Snapchat wrote in response last week. “Over the past year we’ve implemented various safeguards to make it more difficult to do,” it added. “We recently added additional counter-measures and continue to make improvements to combat spam and abuse.”

After the release of the SnapchatDB database, Gibson said in a Twitter message that it knew nothing about SnapchatDB, but it was a matter of time until something like it happened. “Also the exploit works still with minor fixes,” it added.

No WhatsApp behind the wheel please!

Using social media or calling people while driving is a common sight nowadays but even the simplest distraction behind the wheel can put a young driver at risk.

Dialling cell phones, checking SMSs, eating and talking to passengers - this multi-tasking among teens while driving greatly raise their risk of crashes and/or near-crash incidents, says a new study.

"Novice drivers are more likely to engage in high-risk secondary tasks more frequently over time as they became more comfortable with driving. The increasingly high rates of secondary task engagement among newly-licensed novice drivers are worrisome as this appears to be an important contributing factor to crashes or near-crashes," warned Charlie Klauer, group leader for teen risk and injury prevention at the transportation institute's Center for Vulnerable Road User Safety in Virginia, US.

Traffic studies show that drivers from 15 years to 20 years of age represent 6.4 percent of all motorists on the road, but account for 11.4 percent of fatalities and 14 percent of police-reported crashes resulting in injuries, said the study conducted by Virginia Tech Transportation Institute and the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development.

"Any secondary task that takes the novice driver's eyes off the road increases risk. A distracted driver is unable to recognise and respond to road hazards, such as the abrupt slowing of a lead vehicle or the sudden entrance of a vehicle, pedestrian, or object onto the forward roadway," added the study, published in the journal New England Journal of Medicine.

Klauer and her team compared the results of a one-year, 100-car study with drivers between 18 and 72 years of age with an average of 20 years' experience and an 18-month study of 42 teens who had drivers' licenses for less than three weeks.

Participants from both studies drove vehicles outfitted with data acquisition systems, including cameras and a suite of sensors which collected continuous video and driving performance data for the duration of both studies.

A secondary task was considered a contributing factor to any crash or near-crash event if it occurred within five seconds prior to or within one second after the event, said the study.

The data revealed that compared to experienced drivers, novice drivers engaged in secondary tasks less frequently during the first six months.

However, they matched experienced drivers between months seven and 15, and were engaged in non-driving tasks more often than experienced drivers during months 16 through 18 - a two-fold increase in risky distractions during the last three months of the study.

"Newly-licensed novice drivers are of course at a particularly high crash risk, in part because driving is a complicated task and novices tend to make more mistakes when learning a new task," said Klauer.

Cloud storage startup Dropbox looking to woo corporates

Dropbox weathered Steve Jobs' anger and his desire to kill it but it now has a tougher challenge on cards: getting myriad businesses and corporations across the world, including India, to sign up for its service. The cloud storage startup has made headway among consumers, restless internet surfers and download addicts but is only now starting to woo corporations, big and small.

It has tied up with Salesforce.com and Dell to penetrate the business market and has seen strong growth in the space. Dropbox also plans to expand in India in the next two or three years.

"A lot of companies have a strong engineering presence in India; Google certainly does, and it would make sense to put things like user operation centres here.

We don't have a specific timeline for it, but I would be surprised if we didn't have something here," Sujay Jaswa, business development head at Dropbox, told ET. Jaswa added that the company had just begun its international expansion last year and was going to open its first Asia-Pacific office in the first quarter of 2014.

Started by two MIT graduates, Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi, Dropbox was named the fifth most valuable tech startup after Facebook, Twitter, Zynga and Groupon by US tech blog Business Insider. The San Francisco-based startup, which counts U2 musicians Bono and The Edge as investors, has about 200 million users globally and is reportedly seeking to raise $250 million, according to media reports. The latest round is expected to value the company at $8 billion, about $1.5 billion for every year of its existence.

Jaswa, who asked the founders for a job while carpooling to a concert in Silicon Valley, is the first non-MIT hire at the firm.

Dropbox offers storage on the cloud and then syncs that account to various devices. Storage up to 2 GB is free and more than that has to be paid for a common 'freemium' model among start-ups. While there are other cloud storage companies, Dropbox's early-mover advantage among consumers and the fact that it allows users to boost storage by inviting friends to the service gives it an edge.

"If you look at paying clients, it's quite huge. I would say we are quite comparable to many publicly-listed software-as-a-service companies," Jaswa said. Dropbox's growth, and heady valuation, comes at a time when it is up against deep-pocketed players like Google, Microsoft and Apple in the cloud storage space something industry experts attribute to the fundamental change the company is helping drive in personal computing — where files can be accessed wherever and whenever, regardless of the operating system.

Companies to use Dropbox include venture firm Accel Partners, location tagging start-up Foursquare, education site Khan Academy and travel site Kayak. "Prior to Dropbox, we put all event files onto flash drives — and usually two people carried them.

Now, all we need is Dropbox for Business," Dixon Chan, IT Director, Accel, said in a case study on the firm's use of Dropbox. The company has come a long way since Steve Jobs vowed to kill it in 2011. Apple had tried to acquire Dropbox and when Jobs couldn't buy out the company, he said it would come after its business, Dropbox CEO Drew Houston said in a Salesforce.com conference in November.

Six months after that meeting with Jobs, Apple launched iCloud — its cloud storage platform — and in his penultimate keynote Jobs said the product was geared at taking out Dropbox. "It was a tough day. I'll never forget that day. I'd just walked in and Drew called me over to his computer and we're watching it (the keynote) and it was intimidating because Steve Jobs was the most iconic business person of our generation.

So, we were both like, 'this is going to be tough'. But our success validates our technology." Jaswa said.

Now, far from death, Dropbox has mutual fund investors like Fidelity on board, according to a Reuters report citing data from Morningstar, giving the funds a headstart when the company goes public. Other funds with stakes in Dropbox include funds owned by Morgan Stanley and T Rowe Price. Venture fund Sequoia and hedge fund Valiant Capital also own stakes in the company.

"Their growth has been exponential even with competition and they have executed really well. They are the classic case for being able to attract new users by allowing people to invite friends. It's viral and it's simple," Mukund Mohan, CEO-in-residence of the Microsoft Accelerator and a Dropbox user, told ET.

Tech forecasting firm Gartner predicted last year that the personal cloud would replace the personal computer as the center of users' digital lives by 2014. "Major trends in client computing have shifted the market away from a focus on personal computers to a broader device perspective that includes smartphones, tablets and other consumer devices," said Steve Kleynhans, research vice-president at Gartner.

"Emerging cloud services will become the glue that connects the web of devices that users choose to access during the different aspects of their daily life."

HP may cut 34,000 jobs by October due to falling PC sales

Struggling with falling PC sales and adverse market conditions, US-based technology giant Hewlett- Packard (HP) expects to eliminate up to 34,000 jobs by October this year as part of its multi-year restructuring programme to cut costs.

The company will incur about $4.1 billion in aggregate charges, which includes severance and other charges.

In July last year, HP had estimated eliminating about 29,000 positions through fiscal year 2014 as part of its restructuring programme, which was started in 2012. However, details on which locations would be impacted by the decision were not disclosed. "Due to continued market and business pressures, as of October 31, 2013, HP expects to eliminate an additional 15 per cent of those 29,000 positions or a total of approximately 34,000 positions," HP said in a filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The programme will now cost the company about $4.1 billion in aggregate charges, instead of the earlier estimate of $3.6 billion, it added. "HP expects approximately $3.5 billion to relate to workforce reductions, including the EER programmes, and approximately $0.6 billion to relate to infrastructure, including data center and real estate consolidation, and other items," it said.

The Palo Alto-headquartered firm recorded a charge of about $1.2 billion in fiscal 2013. The company expects to record these charges through the end of HP's 2014 fiscal year. HP follows November-October as fiscal year. As of October 31, 2013, HP has eliminated about 24,600 positions. HP's annual sales have declined from $127.24 billion in 2011 to $112.3 billion in 2013, mainly due to declining consumer interest in PCs and printers.

However, the company has been able to return to profitability in fiscal 2013 with net earnings of $5.1 billion against a loss of $12.65 billion in the previous financial year.

IIT Kharagpur creates record, more than 1,000 students get jobs

IIT Kharagpur has set a record among all IITs with more than a thousand of its students securing cushyjobs in the first phase of campus placements, officials said today.
Around 1,010 students of the Kharagpur campus accepted job offers in the first round of placements which ended in December.
At IIT Mumbai, there were 900 offers while IIT Delhi got about 750 offers and IIT Kanpur had around 700 offers.
IIT officials said, Kharagpur has achieved a new record with the maximum number of students getting jobs in the IIT system in one phase.
In addition to big names like Google, MicrosoftOracle, Shell, Deutsche Bank, ITC, Schlumberger, Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, Abbott and EXL, start-ups like Flipkart and Housing.com were the ones who made multiple offers in dual figures.
The highest package offered was from a US-based company which has signed an IITian for an annual salary of USD 1.25 lakh (around Rs 77 lakh).
The highest domestic package was of Rs 37 lakh. Two new dual degree programs - Financial Engineering and Engineering Entrepreneurship - proved to be a big hit with 85 per cent students from those courses being placed.
"The programs not only demonstrated acceptability by the industries, but projected the vision of IIT-Kgp for launching novel initiatives," said Prof Sudhir Kumar Barai, in-charge of training and placement, of the institute.
The number of companies offering placements have also increased this year with 195 organisations coming this time.
Barai said another 79 engineering students have accepted pre-placement offers from other companies.

Microsoft Skype's Facebook, Twitter accounts hacked

The Syrian Electronic Army, an amorphous hacker collective that supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, claimed credit for hacking into the social media accounts of internet calling service Skype.

The group also posted the contact information of Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's retiring chief executive, on its Twitter account along with the message, "You can thank Microsoft for monitoring your accounts/emails using this details. #SEA"

That message was an apparent reference to revelations last year by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden that Skype, which is owned by Microsoft, was part of the NSA's program to monitor communications through some of the biggest US internet companies.

A message posted on Skype's official Twitter feed, apparently by the hacking group, read: "Don't use Microsoft emails (hotmail, outlook), They are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments. More details soon. #SEA"

Similar messages were posted on Skype's official Facebook pages and on a blog on its website before being taken down in late afternoon. The SEA later tweeted out copies of the message "for those who missed it."

Representatives for Microsoft could not be reached for comment.

The NSA's practices essentially made Microsoft and other technology companies partners in government surveillance efforts against private citizens in the United States and elsewhere.

Last month Microsoft joined seven other top technology companies in pressing President Barack Obama to rein in the US government's electronic spying in a meeting at the White House.

Media companies, including the New York Times and the BBC, have repeatedly been targeted by the Syrian Electronic Army and other hacker activist groups that deface websites and take over Twitter accounts.

Obama and his national security team are trying to decide what recommendations to adopt from an outside panel's review of the NSA's activities.

A US District judge in December ruled that the US government's gathering of Americans' phone records is likely unlawful and raised what he called "serious doubts" about the value of the so-called metadata counter-terrorism program.

A second federal judge ruled later in the month that the program was constitutional, raising the likelihood that the issue will be settled by the US Supreme Court.

This week, a monitoring group said the death toll in Syria's civil war, which began in March 2011 as peaceful protests against four decades of rule by Assad's family, had risen to at least 130,000.

New Year cheer: 8.5 lakh new jobs, 20% pay hike, say experts

It may rain jobs in the new year as companies are gearing up to add over 8 lakh new employees to their payrolls and dole out salary hikes of up to 20 per cent to best performers in 2014, say experts.
As per estimates of various human resource consultants, the year 2014 seems very promising for job market unlike 2013, when hirings went slow across mid and senior levels and recruitments were done only to replace 'key' gaps.
In the new year, the country is likely to witness a huge surge of opportunities for job seekers with more and more corporates investing in their businesses.
"Yes, 2014 looks bullish on hiring. 2014 will be seen as a good happening year from the jobs perspective as the global economy is improving and India being one of the largest service provider for the global market," leading executive search firm GlobalHunt MD Sunil Goel said.
According to industry estimates, over 8.5 lakh new jobs may be created in the calender year 2014. The issuance of new banking licences will be a major contributor, while IT, healthcare, agri-business, infrastructure and education sectors are also likely to witness robust hiring trends.
"Last calendar year was not good either for job seekers or for employers due to uncertain and fluctuated economical and political conditions. 2014 is coming with positive vibes for jobseekers and expecting to create 8.5 lacs new jobs in different sectors," Rajesh Kumar, CEO, MyHiringClub.com & FlikJobs.com said.
With regards to salary, the average hike for most sectors is expected in single digits, while top performers can expect pay rise of around 15-20 per cent in 2014, experts say.
"This New Year is going to bring cheer for employees with a salary hike of double-digit of at least 10-12 per cent. In 2014, companies are expected to revise the compensation package and explore a more motivational approach," Indian Staffing Federation Vice President Rituparna Chakraborty said.
"All indications are that the average increase will be around 10 per cent across the industries. However, as pressure is mounting on companies to keep its growth intact, high achievers will be getting increase better than last year, which may range between 15-18 per cent in different sectors," GHCL Ltd VP and Head-Human Resources Rajesh Tripathi said.
Echoing similar sentiments, Vdopia's spokesperson, Preetesh Chouhan, VP-APAC, believes ideally a high performer receives an incremental hike of 12-15 per cent in comparison to an average rise in salary.
According to Changeyourboss.com CEO Bhupender Mehta, sectors like services, mining, construction and infrastructure are expected to up their hiring activities and companies are expected to give 12 per cent average salary hike.
Lighthouse Partners' Managing Partner Rajiv Burman said a new government in 2014 should emphasise on promoting growth and therefore hiring trends will also improve. The pay hikes could be 5 per cent for average performers and 10-20 per cent for high achievers, he said.

Google kills file-sharing apps Bump and Flock

Smartphone file-sharing apps Bump and Flock have announced that they will be discontinued at the end of January.

US internet giant Google bought the startup behind the apps, Bump Technologies, in September for a deal reportedly worth between $30 million and $60 million.

"We are now deeply focused on our new projects within Google, and we've decided to discontinue Bump and Flock," Bump co-founder and chief executive David Lieb wrote in a blog post late on Tuesday.

On January 31, Bump and Flock will be removed from both the App Store and Google Play, after which neither app will work and all user data will be deleted.

Over the coming weeks, users can export their data by opening either app and following instructions. They will then receive an email with a link containing their photos, videos, contacts and other data.

Lieb thanked users for their feedback, enthusiasm and support over the years, saying it "brought much meaning to our work."

"In many ways, Bump was a revolutionary product that inspired many subsequent advances and helped push the world forward," Lieb wrote. "We hope our new creations at Google will do the same."

The Bump application lets smartphone users easily share data by gently knocking knuckles while holding devices.

Flock software taps into smartphone location-sensing technology to note when friends are in proximity of one another and lets them contribute to sets of photos reflecting shared experiences such as a concerts or sporting events.

Samsung revamps Galaxy Android compact camera

Samsung has introduced a new compact camera with Android as an upgrade to the highly praised Galaxy.
The Samsung Galaxy 2 features a 16 million pixel BSI CMOS sensor, and now features an upgraded 1.6GHz Quad-Core processor, which is supported by 2.0GB of RAM.
As with the previous Galaxy camera, it features integrated Wi-Fi and NFC for instant sharing between devices or straight to social networking sites. There's also a pre-loaded Dropbox app which includes 50GB of free cloud storage for up to two years.
Aside from the processor and memory, most of the technical features of the camera appear to be the same as its predecessor.

Tag and Go

A new Tag and Go feature makes it quick to connect the Galaxy Camera with NFC enabled smartphones and devices by quickly tapping the two devices together. Other connectivity options include Photo Beam, where the picture on screen is automatically sent to the smartphone, while Mobile Link allows for select images to be transferred. A Remote Viewfinder option is also available from your smartphone or tablet too.
On the back of the camera is a huge 4.8inch HD Super CLear Touch LCD panel.
Other features include Smart Mode, which utilises 28 different pre-set modes to address different shooting scenarios including a new Smart Mode Selfie Alartm mode which takes five consecutive shots to select the best angle to share on social networking sites.
Pricing and availability have yet to be confirmed.

Snapchat, Vine among top smartphone apps of 2013

Snapshot, Vine, and Candy Crush Saga earned coveted spots on smartphones this year, making them among the most downloaded apps of the year.
There are more than a million apps on Apple Inc's App Store and Google Inc's Play store, the two dominant marketplaces for apps, which see billions of downloads each year.
This year, the most downloaded apps were new takes on communication, gaming, and entertainment, according to mobile app experts.
"2013 was a really interesting year in terms of maturation, milestones and new trends," said Craig Palli, chief strategy officer at Fiksu, a mobile marketing company based in Boston. "The most downloaded apps were in familiar categories, but offered new twists," he added.
While old favorites such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter - available for iPhone, Android and other devices - continued to be popular ways of communicating with friends, Snapchat eclipsed them in downloads in 2013, becoming the sixth most downloaded free app of the year on the App Store, according to Apple.
"Snapchat went from being a niche app to achieving much more critical mass, so much so that Facebook was reportedly willing to spend billions of dollars to acquire the company," said Palli.
With Snapchat, users can send photos and videos that disappear shortly after they are viewed.
Launched in 2011, the app's user base continued to grow rapidly in 2013, with over 13 million people using the app in October, according to the lastest available estimates from global information and measurement company Nielsen. In December alone, over 400 million pieces of content were shared through the app, according to Snapchat, based in Venice, CA.
Vine, a video sharing app released earlier this year by microblogging company Twitter Inc, was the fourth most downloaded free app in 2013. The app, for iPhone, Android and other devices, allows users to share videos under six seconds in length. Nielsen estimates over 6 million people in the US were using the app in October of this year.
Snapchat and Vine fall into a category that mobile analytics firm Flurry calls camera-enhanced messaging, which they said grew eightfold in 2013.
"The communications category underwent phenomenal growth this year. Messaging apps like Snapchat, Line, Kakao (KakaoTalk) and WeChat are all exploding and becoming bigger than the carriers in their home countries in terms of users," said Simon Khalaf, chief executive of San Francisco-based company Flurry.

POWER STEERING

Power Steering

Power steering assists the driver of an automobile in steering by directing a portion of the vehicle’s power to traverse the axis of one or more of the road wheels. As vehicles have become heavier and switched to front wheel drive, particularly using negative offset geometry, along with increases in tire width and diameter, the effort needed to turn the steering wheel manually has increased often to the point where major physical exertion is required. To alleviate this, auto makers have developed power steering systems: or more correctly power-assisted steering on road going vehicles there has to be a mechanical linkage as a fail safe. There are two types of power steering systems hydraulic and electric/electronic.

What to expect from tech in 2014

This time last year, we spoke about how 2013 will see increased personalization of IT and mobile devices like smartphones. That did happen, but it also led to privacy walls being breached. In the coming year, thanks to Edward Snowden's revelations, people will be more conscious about privacy, and will take care to protect information stored on their devices and ensure their online behavior remains confidential.

Michael Joseph, manager, systems engineering, Saarc, Fortinet, says home automation devices that control electrical consumption, temperature of fridges, etc could become new targets.

Security fears notwithstanding, we will be more dependent on technology. Devices like Google Glass and smart watches will get better. Person to person, person to machine, and machine to machine interactions will increase.
Sunil Lalvani, MD, BlackBerry, India, feels technologies like NFC and M2M will move to the next level driven by smartphones. S Rajendran, CMO, Acer India, says people will use at least three connected devices for their diverse needs like editing, watching videos or simply connecting with friends.
Apple's Mac Pro fairly easy to repair, says iFixit.

Phillip Beniac, regional VP, Qlik-Tech, Asia Pacific and Japan, sees the emergence of touch as a shift from consumerization to humanization of IT. "Touch technologies encourage interactivity in surprising ways - people simply enjoy working with touch and appear to be more willing to explore with a tactile interface than with a mouse-driven environment."

Television revolution
High definition and ultra-high definition technologies will be more affordable, presenting us with exciting opportunities for new video experiences not seen before. According to Cisco, video technology in ultra-high definition will become imperative for smartphones , augmented reality glasses, tablets and other devices equipped with camera.

Manoj Padmanabhan, business head, new media, Zee Entertainment, says 2014 will see a sharp upswing in the number of users consuming video and TV on-the-go . "With smartphones offering bigger screens and better audio /video outputs, live TV has already caught the attention of the youth in a big way. Further, players like Ditto TV are available across all OS and devices giving the youth multiple access points." He says there is a possibility of content providers tailoring content only for mobile TV in the near future.

Big data and analytics
With increasing ease of collecting data, analytics will boom. According to Anand Ramakrishnan, business head, HCL Services, "Real-time access to multi-structured data improves decision making and enables businesses to be more agile to market conditions. They will have to leverage social networking , cloud services, analytics and mobility."
Gaurav Vohra, founder of business analytics school Jigsaw Academy, feels more businesses will leverage social media to connect to customers. "Techniques like text analytics and sentiment analysis will gain credence," he says.

Enterprise app stores
Due to increasing penetration of mobile devices at the workplace, users expect enterprises to provide the capability, flexibility and power they get in the consumer world. "This is likely to lead to organizations setting up app stores of their own, referred to as enterprise app store where an employee can go and get access to all the applications required to perform a business task/activity," says Sanjay Deshmukh, area VP, India subcontinent , Citrix.

Five things tech made better in 2013

By Anick Jesdanun, deputy technology editor, AP

NEW YORK: As I look back at the more than 100 tech products we reviewed in 2013, a handful of gadgets and services deserve a second look.

It's become clear that one brand rarely stands out any more in whatever product category you look at. Competition is more intense than ever, which means consumers have more choices than ever. That's why coming up with a "best of" list for 2013 proved difficult.

So instead of a comprehensive list, I'm highlighting five big trends. These are also areas where further innovations are likely in 2014, so stay tuned.

Better camera phones
This was the first year I didn't mind leaving my point-and-shoot and full-bodied, SLR cameras at home. Camera phones have gotten good enough to stand in for those stand-alone cameras in many situations.

Of the ones I tried, Apple's iPhone 5S proved to be the best as an all-around camera. It's good at getting the auto-focus right, even for moving objects. A larger sensor and an improved flash compared with previous models mean better shots in low light.

An honorable mention goes to Nokia's Lumia 1020. It's consistently good at night and indoor shots. It combines the small amount of light from multiple pixels into one, resulting in better lighting. It also has manual controls typically absent from camera phones.

Given how frequently people use their phones to take photos, expect even more improvements in the coming year.

Personalized technical support
It used to be when you couldn't figure out how a product worked, you called your tech-savvy children. With Mayday on Amazon's new Kindle Fire HDX tablets, you no longer need to do that. Instead, just tap the Mayday button, and you'll be connected to a live customer service representative within seconds, even at 4 a.m. on a weekend.

Amazon's representatives can help you install apps, connect to Facebook or tackle anything else confounding you. You see them on the screen, but they can only hear you. They have a virtual orange marker to point you to buttons and menus on the screen. They also can take over your machine remotely and do it for you.

As gadgets do more, they also get more complicated to use. As someone who's constantly asked by friends and family for tech assistance, the Mayday feature is something I would welcome in other products.

Shackle-free phone plans
The traditional way of buying phones: Pay $100 or $200 for a phone, and stay locked to your wireless carrier for two more years.

The new way: Buy or bring your own phone. Leave any time.

T-Mobile introduced that concept in March when it split the monthly phone bill into two parts -- one for the device, and the other for the voice, text and data services. If you already have a device or have finished paying for it, your overall bill goes down. If you need a phone, you pay its full retail price, spread out into monthly installments. You're no longer getting a subsidy for signing a contract, but you're also not paying for it through a higher phone bill.

A few months later, T-Mobile introduced a program that lets you upgrade your phone up to twice a year, rather than every other year. The other national carriers followed with their own contract-free, frequent-upgrade plans. AT&T also lowered its service fees for voice, text and data for those who pay for phones separately. Sprint reduced those fees as well, but only temporarily.

Some people will still find it more cost-effective to buy phones the traditional way, but these contract-free options give consumers more freedom to leave their carrier or change phones frequently.

Meanwhile, some phone makers have come out with cheaper phones that do almost as much as the $600-plus ones. Motorola's Moto G phone is particularly notable, at just $179 _ ideal when you pay for your own phone.

Laptops with long-lasting batteries
Most laptop owners no doubt have found themselves out of juice at the most inopportune times, whether in the middle of an important business meeting or the start of a super-long flight to Asia or Australia.

A new generation of processing chips from Intel makes that far less likely to happen. These chips, known as Haswell, are more efficient at using power. It's now possible to go a full waking day on a single charge, with some reasonable breaks for meals and exercise.

The 13-inch (33-centimeter) MacBook Air, for instance, promises up to 12 hours of battery life. I was able to stretch that to more than 14 hours by turning off Wi-Fi, though nine to 11 hours was more common with general Web surfing. On the Windows 8 machines I tested, I was able to get seven to nine hours consistently.

Expect to pay at least $1,000 for a Haswell laptop, though prices may start coming down in the new year.

Internet television
A few friends and I dropped cable TV service this year. I saved more than $100 a month and used some of that to buy a new TV. You might be wondering: Huh?

Several options are now available for watching television over the Internet. Watching on a computer or a tablet seems unsatisfactory.

With a streaming device such as Roku, Apple TV or Chromecast or a game console such as the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One, you can project Internet video to the big screen. You'll need to subscribe to a handful of services such as Netflix or Hulu Plus.

The downside is you often need to wait at least a day for shows to become available online. That means avoiding spoilers on social networks. It's also a poor option for live sports. Major League Baseball has a great online service, but typically blocks hometown teams.

But it's money saved to buy the hot gadgets of 2014 -- or tickets to a ballgame, plus beer and hot dogs.
